Day 3: An Active Rest Day With the Whole Family Home

It's Saturday, day three, and the whole house is home, hubby included. This was an active rest day, so the focus was my checklist and finishing my 72-hour fast, which was set to end at 6:30 p.m.

Morning Sleep Check and Weigh-In

Samsung Health gave me a sweet little message: after not sleeping enough the night before, I got enough sleep to feel my best. I logged 6 hours and 59 minutes, so I counted my 7-hour goal as met, with about an hour and 14 minutes of deep sleep and an hour and 13 minutes of REM. Then I did my morning weigh-in.

Soccer Practice and a Walmart Run

Next up was my son's soccer practice, with hubby driving. When he's home, I don't drive, and I don't open doors either. We'd planned a Home Depot run but ended up at Walmart, my favorite place, instead. Busy-mom days still count.

How I Planned to Break My Fast

Around 2 p.m. I prepped my break-fast meal ahead of time. My plan was to start with bone broth and then move on to real food. My go-to meal after a fast is what I call my tuna and cucumber platter: light, high in protein, full of veggies, fast, easy, and cheap. It's also something I eat during regular diet periods because it's genuinely satisfying.

My Tuna and Cucumber Platter

Here's what goes in it: shredded carrots, cucumbers, chopped eggs to ramp up the protein (a medium to large egg has about 6 grams, so about 12 grams here), and the star of the show, tuna. Each can I used has about 24 grams of protein, and I ate both cans. I make a tuna salad and put it on the cucumbers. I wasn't chasing my 150-gram protein goal today, because there's no way to get there in one break-fast meal, and that's okay.

Breaking the Fast (I Skipped the Bone Broth)

After my red light treatment, I was so relaxed that I took a catnap. By about 5:30 p.m. I was ready to break my fast. Honestly, I was hungry, so I skipped the bone broth and went straight to my tuna and cucumber platter, plus a protein shake with 42 grams of protein. My hack: liquid egg whites in the shake. It did have a fair amount of calories from the milk and protein powder, so I count it as more of a meal shake.

Finishing My Steps and Looking Ahead to Day 4

At 8 p.m. I was only at 6,790 steps, so I went down to the basement treadmill for an easy 35-minute stroll and finished at 10,458 steps. Then came nighttime skincare and bed. Starting day four, I'm tracking 150 grams of protein and 2 liters of water a day, plus a super greens drink and green tea. This is my personal experience, not medical advice, so please talk to your doctor before trying an extended fast. Glow hard. GRIT harder.
